Old Sarum These ruins of the original settlement of Salisbury date from 300BC to approximately the 13th century. The Romans, the Saxons, the Danes, and finally the Norman conquerors of England occupied the hilltop fort. This is the site where William the First disbanded his successful army in 1070, paying them with the treasures of the defeated Saxons. The town began to thrive, and a cathedral and royal castle were built. Soon the town had to relocate on account of the necessity of space. The earthwork at Old Sarum tells of a vibrant history, and is definitely worth a visit. Address: Two miles north of the city, Salisbury
